His point is that the task is getting the best grade that you can in a class. So don’t just half ass it bec “C’s get degrees” for engineering. He’s not talking about it being necessary to have a 4.0 to get a decent job.

after your first job, it literally doesn't matter, so many people have As, they care about projects and experience more than your grades

In my opinion your grades does not matter (at least not where I studied) because the tests you have to take only grades you on the syllabus, In work you will probably use 10-20% of the things you have learned in uni. The more important thing is your problem solving capability. Yes there are some subjects, that you have to know back to back to bee a good engineer, but the real word problems differ very much from the lectures. Yes the academic knowledge is important when you are researching (like in PhD), but to be abel to grasp new knowledge and understand new problems you need the problem solving skills more. I’m not say that you shouldn’t study everything. I’m saying that you need to practice the methods of how to solve problems. In the workforce you can use any devices (notes, AI, apps), but you have to know how to use them correctly.
