@healthdecide: See what a Boutonnière Deformity looks like in 4K 3D The term “Boutonniere deformity” comes from the French word “boutonnière,” meaning “buttonhole.” It was named this way because the deformity makes the finger look as if the head of the proximal phalanx (the middle joint bone) is poking through the slit of a buttonhole formed by the torn central tendon. In other words, the tendon injury creates a “hole” through which the bone projects — resembling a button pushed through a buttonhole, hence Boutonniere deformity. It occurs when the central slip of the extensor tendon is damaged, causing the middle joint (PIP) to bend downward and the end joint (DIP) to bend upward.
