You know why ? Because it’s all connected to a world view (mostly religion) that if someone really wanted to understand, it’ll most likely break something in that world view of theirs leading to inner conflicts and insecurities. Most people don’t want to do that (unconsciously)

debate in french : débattre LITERALLY mean : "not fight". dé (negative) battre (fight, beat) So a debate is supposed to be a conversation without fighting. I don't understand how debate became the opposite of what it means.
