April 1982 Danceteria 2nd floor 30 W 21st. Street New York NY Audio: Madonna in interview with Australia’s Molly Meldrum in December 1985. Discussing Mark Kamins, Danceteria and the demo tape. Photo: Madonna by Tom Morillo, Spring 1982. ———————— A Friday night during April 1982 Madonna meets DJ Mark Kamins at Danceteria. From 1979 Mark was splitting his time between DJ’ing and working as an A&R at Island Records. He DJ’d first at Trax where he met Island founder Chris Blackwell then at Danceteria from ‘80 He had already assisted in signing, Was Not Was to Island. And was instrumental in the fruition of Tom Tom Club’s ‘Genius of Love’ and Grace Jones’ ‘Pull Up To The Bumper’. In 1981 he remixed a David Byrne track ‘Big Business’ for Sire Records. He met (engineer on ‘Everybody’) Butch Jones during those remix sessions. From its reopening in February ‘82, Madonna had become a regular at Danceteria, at 30 W 21st. Street. Cutting up the dance floor and hanging out - many have reported over the years that she worked there. I can confirm that after much research this is absolutely untrue! She was hanging out with Erika Belle - as already reported. Erika ran a bar/club called ‘Lucky Strike’, it was here that Madonna worked as a bar tender for a short time in ‘82. During April ‘82 Madonna was carrying her four track demo tape everywhere with her and trying to get anyone to play it. After much persuasion Mark took the tape she gave him home with him. The next night he played two songs, one of them was ‘Everbody’. We can assume at this point that due the other track was ‘Ain’t No Big Deal’. Reports have suggested Kamins and Madonna began a brief relationship again this has never been confirmed. Following the success of the Madonna’s tracks at Danceteria Kamins took her tape to Chris Blackwell founder of Island records. Blackwell passes on her so Kamins then took the tape to Seymour Stein at Sire Records……… #madonna #1982 #newyork #danceteria 👑🔥🔥🔥👑
