Coastal Saffron Milk Cap 3 Species - Cryptic Species Complex Yo, what's up my coastal homies?! Along the Washington coastline, the mushrooms commonly called "saffron milk cap" belong to a complex of North American species in *Lactarius* section *Deliciosi*, not the true European *Lactarius deliciosus*. They grow under coastal shore pines (Pinus contorta subspecies contorta), foragers regularly encounter an orange-latex form traditionally labeled *Lactarius deliciosus* sensu Hesler & Smith (sometimes called the western saffron milk cap). Thiis taxon remains formally undescribed and is genetically distinct from the European species. In the SAME coastal zone, especially under Sitka spruce, the smaller, dingier *Lactarius aurantiosordidus* (formerly treated as *L. deliciosus* var. *olivaceosordidus*) is frequent; it produces scant orange latex and develops extensive greenish staining. (Thank you, Daniel Winkler) Lactarius aestivus, described from Washington and associated mainly with fir and hemlock, also occurs in coastal and near-coastal forests and is distinguished by bright orange latex that stains green only slowly, if at all. A related species with red to brownish-red latex, *Lactarius rubrilacteus*, appears more often with Douglas-fir but can turn up in mixed coastal stands. Because taxonomy in this group is still incomplete, precise identification often rests on host tree, latex color and staining behavior, and *microscopic features* rather than a single species name. We need a microscope to distinguish between the four different species that grow here. when we can no longer distinguish different mushroom species visually, that's when it becomes "cryptic" and the "species complex" means there are lots of different species of mushrooms that are virtually identical and nearly impossible to differentiate amongst one another. so by combining these two terms, "species complex" and "cryptic", it means that there are several varieties of edible saffron milk caps that grow here on the coastal region of the Pacific Northwest, and that they are virtually impossible to distinguish from one another or are literally impossible to distinguish amongst one another without a microscope. Maybe this is why so many Coastal foragers report different experiences when they eat the mushroom. What do you think?
