1. Interoception: AKA “Internal Cues”. Ever felt drawn to a flow session because you felt an anxious pit in your stomach? You just practiced interoceptive awareness, then the management of it. ADHD/Autism/AuDHDer’s if you struggle with interoceptive cues, this is one reason flow arts can be life changing. 2. Proprioception: Close your eyes and touch your nose. How did your brain know where it was? Imagine lifting a heavy dumbbell, then a piece of paper. You might fling the paper as your brain adjusts its output of muscular force. Probably the number 1 technique that OT’s incorporate, and my personal favorite. 3. Vestibular: When you’re in an elevator, you know if you’re going up or down. Gravity awareness, spinning, and craving watching things in motion. 4. Music/Sound: Everything starts coming together including both Wernicke's and Broca’s regions of the brain at the same time. Few other physical activities combine this. 5. Visual Perceptual: Pretty lights, neons, glowing, flashing, strobes. Then we’ve got object tracking, jumping your vision between multiple props, following where one went after a toss… 6. Tactile: On body feels, contact on your skin, even the pleasant familiarity of just holding your favorite flow toy as soon as you pick it up. If you have ADHD/Autism/AuDHD (like me), flow arts and the connection to sensory seeking/avoiding/under/over responsiveness is profound, you might be regulating through them in some way. I’ve been a licensed and practicing Occupational Therapist for over a decade and a Flow Artist for about 12 years, ask me anything. #flowarts #adhd #sensory #hoopdance #edm *This is not medical or mental health advice, this is for educational purposes.
