‼️Big changes for Thailand’s Nov-Dec festivals following national mourning, check our latest post/find latest info‼️ Quick Guide to Loy Krathong & Lantern Release 2025! ✦ WHEN: The main night is Thursday, November 5, 2025 (it’s the full moon day). But the festivities usually run longer around it (depend on locations, read 👇.) ✦ WHAT: 👉 Loy Krathong: Floating decorated baskets (krathongs) on the water to thank the Water Goddess and float away bad luck. 👉 Lantern Release (Yi Peng): Only primarily in the North (most popular in Chiang Mai), where thousands of lanterns fly into the sky. 📍 WHERE to Go: Loy Krathong happens all over the country, however, special events like a firework, performance, are big in these places 1️⃣ Bangkok (The Glamour): Celebrate along the Chao Phraya River. Great for dinner cruises, riverside parties (Asiatique/ICONSIAM), or floating a krathong in a city park (like Lumpini Park). 2️⃣ Sukhothai - IN THIS CLIP (The Traditional): The festival’s historical birthplace, known for beautiful light shows, traditional dances, and historical park celebrations. 3️⃣ Chiang Mai (The Vibe): This is the place for the spectacular sky lanterns (Yi Peng) *and* the usual floating krathongs too. ⚠️ Note that for the free, public release at Doi Saket Lake in Chiang Mai: The organized local festival at this site is reportedly CANCELLED for 2025 (at least that’s what it says all over the news). And you CANNOT release lanterns in Chiang Mai’s city center due to the airport ban & residential area—you can face huge fines. 👉 Your 2025 Options for releasing the lanterns: 1️⃣ PAY: Buy an expensive, advance ticket to one of the private, synchronized *mass release* events (like CAD) outside the city.
