I think there’s different reasons this happens, some of it’s fetishization (they want a bad girl before they marry the good girl), some want to cage a bird, and others want the emotional labor someone who isn’t conservative is more likely to provide.

Sometimes alt is simply an aesthetic/superficial. Especially nowadays w gen z literally just copying past aesthetics. Style used to be personal and speak for you but that’s not the case anymore. As an alternative woman it’s actually wild, I always get hit on by these kinds of guys. I don’t think I’m from an incredibly blue city but the differences in messages I got on apps when I got to my family’s conservative hometown was appalling, these guys saw my piercings and tattoos as a green light to talk to me like a sex bot. I think it’s more of a fetish thing than a type. Before, porn-riddled conservative men in that town would just get their wives from Asia online lol

I used to work with these guys who were southern and not alternative, at all. We were talking and I mentioned that listen to primarily punk, alternative, etc. music. This for some reason made them think they could tell me their weird obsession with alt and goth girls. Very misogynistic and bordering predatory. They didn’t like what I had to say back to them. Ever since, if I meet a guy who isn’t alt and they talk about how they really want an alt or goth girls, the red flags start waving in my face.
