This question is for serious singers. Do you know your identity? Of course you do. You know who you are. You know your name, you know if you’re an introvert or an extrovert. You know where you fit in the world. But does having the voice you’ve always wanted to have fit with your identity? Are those two congruent? Because your brain will always try to preserve your identity And if being the singer you want to be doesn’t match your current identity your brain will help you stay where you are to preserve your identity. That’s its focus. That’s why this is a deeper conversation than how do I get high notes. The question is, what is my identity? And is my identity that of a wonderful singer? Or is my identity one that is always looking for my voice, always trying to find my voice, not able to do it. My identity over the years had become the guy who was willing to do anything to get his voice, trying every teacher, trying every exercise, working like crazy, willing to move to different cities to follow teachers, willing to do anything…and that became my identity. I didn’t have the identity as a great singer. I had the identity of a guy who couldn’t find his voice and was always looking. What is your identity in this?
