@monstrofarm: I think rescuing orchids is becoming one of my favorite pastimes. These plants are so rewarding. Not only do they look beautiful while they’re in bloom, but to me just the leaves alone make a statement. After finding this one around a bunch of others, I decided this was the lucky one to come home with me to live out her best life. This is how I did it: 🪴I started by removing her from the pot to see what I was working with. The bark she was growing in melted off easily. Unfortunately, the roots had a little bit of disease, but not much. Once all the bark was removed, I sprayed her down with some hydrogen peroxide to help prevent any more outbreaks of bacteria. 🪨The media I decided to use to help her grow until she attaches herself to the trunk of the palm is spaghnum moss. And after soaking it in a bowl of water and rinsing out the excess, we were ready to go outside. 🌞Once we were outside, I removed the base of a palm leaf that was still attached to the palm and trimmed it up so it could act as a cup against the trunk of a palm to keep the orchid in place. 🌴After looking for the perfect spot in my yard and on the palm, I decided on a north facing spot on the trunk of a Roebelenii Palm, where she gets plenty of sun, but also a little bit of shade during the hottest times of the day. 🐠Using some fishing line, I kept the base of the palm leaf in place, added a little bit of moss inside, placed the orchid inside, and added additional moss to keep her hydrated and fresh. 💦From here, my plan is to water her about once every 4 to 5 days at the beginning, and then based off of the amount of rainfall we get I’ll determine future watering. I really can’t wait to see her roots attaching to the palm tree and eventually I’ll be able to remove the base of the palm leaf to expose all the roots.
