@beyondflorida: The humble steamship Madison delivered mail up and down the Suwannee River for years - but in 1862 it was conscripted into the Confederate Army during the US Civil War. For three years the Madison shipped horses, supplies, even soldiers between Columbus GA and North Florida. As the Union Army closed in, captain James Tucker scuttled the ship in a small Florida spring, and hoped to come back after the war was over and put the ship back into mail duty. Alas, local scavengers from nearby Branford and Mayo ran off with all the useable parts and when Tucker returned, the ship was not worth raising. Today the remains of the steamship Madison still sit at the bottom of Troy Springs, Florida. #civilwarhistory #floridahistory
