Stephanie Meyer has said that when she wrote the first book, Jacob was never meant to be a love interest. he only existed as a way for Bella to find out about vampires, but then she wrote New Moon and got the idea for the love triangle (even though It's not really a love triangle because it's constantly made clear throughout second and third books that Bella will always choose Edward and that she doesn't love Jacob the way she loves Edward)
