Part 1: Security Let Her Think She Got Away Until This Happened: On August 14, 2025, at approximately 1355 hours, officers responded to a retail store in reference to an aggressive customer who attempted to take merchandise without rendering payment. Upon arrival, an officer met with a loss prevention employee who identified the subject and advised that the store wished to pursue criminal charges related to the theft. The officer made contact with the subject, identified themself, and lawfully advised that she was being detained and was not free to leave. The subject fled east through the parking lot, failing to comply with lawful commands. The officer pursued and attempted to gain control as she resisted by twisting and pulling away. The officer utilized a takedown technique and successfully detained her without further incident. Loss prevention staff provided a sworn statement indicating that the subject was observed at the self-checkout failing to scan numerous items, placing them into Walmart shopping bags, and back into her cart with the intent to deprive the store of its merchandise. When approached after passing all points of sale, she abandoned the merchandise and attempted to leave. The officer reviewed CCTV footage, which corroborated the loss prevention statement. The total value of the unscanned merchandise was $304.31, consisting primarily of clothing items. The subject had only purchased two items. A records check revealed two prior retail theft convictions, one from July 2023 and another from June 2015. Based on the investigation, there was probable cause to charge the subject with Retail Theft with Two or More Prior Convictions and Resisting Arrest.
