🧄👉 Comment GARLIC and I’ll send you the link to my free garlic-growing guide on the blog. I’ve been growing garlic for nearly 20 years, and fall is go time for planting! I plant mine on the early side, usually in September, so it can establish strong roots before the deep cold of winter. Garlic is remarkably cold hardy and overwinters very happily. I’ve never experienced damaged tips from planting early, and this method consistently gives me my biggest heads. Here’s how I grow it: 🧄 Start with your largest cloves. Within the same variety, larger cloves generally produce larger heads. 🛒 No saved garlic? No problem! Look for firm, locally grown garlic. It’s already adapted to your area and may be larger and less expensive than packaged seed garlic. I found beautiful local heads at this year. 🌱 Prepare loose, well-draining soil with compost. I also use trench composting to build organic matter before planting. 🕳️ Dig 4 to 6 inches deep and space cloves 4 to 6 inches apart. ☝️ Plant each clove pointed end up. 🌿 Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of a gentle organic fertilizer to the bottom of each hole. 🍂 Backfill and water. I often skip the mulch in my mild climate, and my garlic does beautifully without being babied. I can grow approximately one year’s worth of garlic in a 4 by 4 foot bed. What you plant now is what you’ll harvest next summer, so don’t miss your window! Comment GARLIC for my free garlic-growing guide, and follow for more seasonal gardening tips and recipes. 💚🧄 🌸Erin
