Khajuraho, located in Madhya Pradesh, India, is one of the most remarkable temple complexes of medieval India — a masterpiece of Chandela dynasty architecture and artistry. Built between c. 950 and 1050 CE, the site once contained over 85 temples, of which around 25 survive today, spread across three distinct groups: Western, Eastern, and Southern. The temples were commissioned by the Chandela Rajputs, a dynasty that ruled central India from the 9th to 13th centuries. According to inscriptions and legends, King Yashovarman initiated the building program, and his successors expanded it over a century of cultural and artistic flourishing. The temples were crafted from locally quarried sandstone, assembled using a unique mortise-and-tenon technique that required no mortar. Each block was carefully interlocked, allowing the structures to endure for over a millennium despite centuries of weathering. Khajuraho’s architecture follows the Nagara style of North Indian temple design, characterised by soaring shikharas (spires) that represent the mythical Mount Meru — the cosmic axis between heaven and earth. The temples are adorned with intricate sculptures depicting deities, celestial beings, musicians, dancers, animals, and scenes from everyday life. Among these carvings are the famous erotic sculptures, which form only a small portion of the overall imagery yet have become the site’s defining feature. These sensual depictions were not mere ornamentation. They symbolised the Tantric philosophy that viewed human desire as an essential step in the spiritual journey — the union of the physical and the divine. The temples, dedicated primarily to Hindu deities such as Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi, as well as a few Jain temples, reflected the Chandelas’ belief in religious tolerance and the coexistence of multiple faiths. Over time, as the Chandela kingdom declined and Islamic dynasties rose in northern India, Khajuraho’s temples fell into obscurity. Dense forest growth concealed the site for centuries until their rediscovery in 1838 by British surveyor T.S. Burt, who was astonished by the preservation and artistry of the carvings.
