it turns out the family had purchased their tickets through a travel agency that had lost its license and was specifically restricted from selling tickets on United already because of previous issues. the tickets were void but the information didn't come to the flight crew until they had already boarded the plane. they were returned home with $150 voucher toward a future flight. they did fix their issue and went on to Europe later on
