@howtoloveaforest: It has been SO dry here in Vermont this summer, and it’s really affecting the trees in our forests. Drought stress affects trees in numerous ways, but one of the most interesting is how it limits trees’ ability to photosynthesize. Essentially (and all of this is a simplification of a massively complex and variable process) to harvest carbon, one of the building blocks of the sugars and starches that are synthesized during photosynthesis, trees need to “inhale” air through their stomata — these “pores” on the underside of their leaves. When this happens, they lose water out through their stomata — a large tree might suck up 150-300 gallons of water a day, about 90% may be lost to the air as vapor. When water is scarce, trees need to “hold their breath” — to close their stomata, which limits their ability to “inhale” carbon, which thus drastically limits their ability to photosynthesize. #tree #trees #plants #plant #nature
