More than two weeks ago, the United States sent Uganda a message the Museveni government never wanted to hear. Level 4: DO NOT TRAVEL. The highest travel warning issued by the U.S. government. Almost immediately, defenders of President Museveni's government rushed to dismiss it. They accused critics of exaggerating, tarnishing Uganda's image, and painting the country as a place of fear. Then the Local Council elections happened. And suddenly, the cameras began telling a story that no government spokesperson could spin away. Soldiers everywhere. Masked men everywhere. Guns everywhere. What should have been a celebration of grassroots democracy instead became another reminder of how deeply militarized public life has become. In my opinion, Uganda's image isn't being destroyed by those who speak about these events. It is being damaged by the events themselves. Because what are Ugandans supposed to tell the world? That it is normal for elections to be surrounded by armed security? That reports of beatings, abductions, and torture should simply be ignored? That political intimidation has become just another part of everyday life? And while all this is happening, the Commander of Defence Forces continues making headlines with inflammatory social media posts directed at political opponents—hardly the image of calm and stability the government wants the world to see. You cannot silence reality. You cannot rebrand fear. And you cannot convince the world that everything is normal when the evidence is unfolding in broad daylight. This is no longer about a U.S. travel advisory. It is about the Uganda we have become... a country where, in my opinion, the military increasingly casts a shadow over civilian life. Watch what unfolded during the Local Council elections... and then ask yourself one question: Did the United States get it wrong... or did Uganda prove them right?
