this exactly. I'm swedish and I adore my country's cuisine, but it is absolutely rooted in poverty, scarcity and neccessity, and I totally understand ppl finding it bland if they didn't grow up with it.

UK food is actually good, people who say it’s gross just haven’t tried it. It’s not ‘bland’ it’s just typically seasoned with herbs rather than spices

Its not even true either! Northern europe has amazing pastries and stews. They dont use spices because spices dont grow here and werent easy to trade for, but herbs do so a bunch of those are used instead

Why are all the examples bad? We have nice vibrant food if you can be bothered to find it

people who say it's boring really not understand how much variability one dish can have and of course don't look in more regional culinary traditions with can be quiet divorce

The idea that an entire country's food is disgusting and there's nothing redeemable also just shows that they've not deconstructed being afraid of "foreign" foods and simply changed the country they're focusing on.

Well even if it is considered bland compared to other countries food that doesn’t make it bad - like I personally feel unwell after eating strong foods but that doesn’t make it bad it’s just not for me

id say there was a lot of creativity because of how scarse food was. the ammount of dishes one can make out of fish potatoes pork and lamb now its impressive.

Good up north is good, people just has a bias towards the most seasoned of food. If you make a food good without spice they the food is good, if it only is good with spice then it sucks

Half of the polish food have very distinct taste though. It's not a subtle flavour. I think drawing the line at balkans creates a huge inaccurate generalisation

Bland is a question of perspective. If bland means non-spicy, and no overwhelming spices, then yes, northern cousine is bland. That doesn’t make it not worthwhile. There is a lot you can do with salted & fermented food, also Fish is quite delicate, and doesn’t need lots of spice/herbs

Also, coming from the uk, a lot of the time when our food is being ridiculed it’s coming from a classist standpoint, like beans on toast, it’s not supposed to be served at like fancy restaurants and stuff, it’s a struggle meal, easy, affordable and kids can eat it (not to mention from what I’ve heard American bread and beans taste a lot different from ours)

I'm Finnish and we were also a very poor country for very long, for a long time food was meant to keep you full and alive, not necessarily to taste good.

Scandinavian/Danish culture :
Denmark’s cuisine shouldn’t be compared to that of other Nordic countries. Copenhagen is recognized as one of Europe’s top food capitals. While everyday meals may be different, Danish cooking relies less on salting, pickling, and drying than other nordic countries. If you look into traditional Danish dishes, you’ll see that they’re typically made with pork, potatoes, herbs, vegetables, and homemade gravy.

Our food might be a bit boring, but some of it is quite nice as well. A lot of people like the food at IKEA, but what you get there is the Swedish variant of what I would say is pretty standard Scandinavian food.

I recognise that the food of my country sweden is not the most exciting, even bland, but i have enormous respect for it because sweden used to be a very poor country and this is what kept my ancestors going
