@rustedoakfarm: Replying to @Fluttershy🌸🐇 Today’s question is why Dutton needs to be good and not a pet.. could YOU afford that? Plus fencing, bedding, vet care, deworming, making a water system AND you have to go outside to feed him rain or shine snow or ice, break his water up even if you are sick and can’t walk. It just seems like an unnecessary waste of resources for a PET when groceries cost me $500 a week for just my kids… bffr #homestead #meatpigs #notarescue #farmlife #familyfarm

animals don't just age and then die peacefully one day. they age, their bodies break down, they suffer then die. or- we can spare them that outcome

I wish more people understood that many animals aren't pets, like at all. You can't keep meat chickens as pets. You know why? They are designed to put on weight to a point that they are then food. The body will give out.

I agree. In my case, we deal with aggressive dogs at my shelter. Any dog that shows aggression during the temperament tests are euthanized. We rather not adopt out a dangerous dog in public.

Some of these rescues are so much worse than just letting them go. You can tell they are suffering because people can't just accept euthanasia.

At the end of the day, people are so disconnected where their food comes from. These pigs have great lives and one bad day. More than what mass factory farmed pigs can say.

I wish more people would stop and actually pay attention to how it all Really works..!!! You explain the process perfectly 👌 Not all animals need "rescued"....

I'm saying this as someone who's been eating like a vegetarian for over 26 years. He had a good life, been in the mud and with companions. He's been taking care of with love, that's very clear. If the next thing is to become meat for your family, that's fine. I'm wondering though, will his meat taste different, because he has been a breeding pig for so long? If I remember correctly, meatpigs are castrated very early?

Sorry I would 100% rather buy pork products from an ethical farmer like yourself than a factory farm any day of the week even though I don’t eat personally eat pork I cook it for others. this is how it’s supposed to be 💕

more people need to understand that meat pigs are usually NOT nice. they can't just be rehomed as 500gk pets, they're usually very brash, aggressive and a serious safety risk. sure some are human raised and can be sweet but most aren't (saying as someone with two 300kg pet pigs AND a neighbour with meat pigs)

I worked on an equine rescue for a while summer. It really put a bad taste in my mouth towards so called “rescues”.

There's a dairy farmer who said it best: they aren't pets, and we're custodians of these animals and have to do what is responsible for them.

I used to work at a wild animal park and things like this are what helped our animals keep a good variety in their diet. Farmers could send us animals to feed (we took horses, pigs, cattle and even deer) and it really gave the animals a lot of variety and enrichment in their lives and it helped farmers to not have to stress over disposal options because not everyone can easily bury 1000+ pounds of animal. We didn’t waste anything. Even things like horns off cattle or antlers off deer got given to animals to play with.

This is why I love your content so much! You are so realistic when it comes to rasing animals. And I can hear the horse person in you when you say you don't want to send him off to be somebody elses problem 😅 I've said that millions of times with my horses. But that's probably how I ended up with 11 here 🤣

EXACTLY!!! So many rescues import animals from other states, just to turn around and beg the local community. Like HELLO?! YOU IMPORTED THEM! Maybe you should have had a plan? You're doing the right thing!

It makes me sad because I know he’s such a big sweetie but you gave him six more months and several chances when others might not have. He’s also gotten several more years than most meat pigs have, he’s had a good life.
