@mrsouthernsmith: Corn (maize) was domesticated about 10,000 years ago in Mexico from the pictured tiny ear of a wild grass called teosinte. It’s transformation through human selection has yielded vast diversity! Yes, my speech therapy and accent doesn’t do well with Oaxaca, please be kind. #garden #PlantTok #plants #History #seed

Native Americans don’t get enough credit for the millennia of work put into their crop plants. Billions of people eat food crops developed by native Americans daily

Some home grown corn that we planted in northern Arizona by the Diné/Navajo. The corn we plant has been passed down from the ladies in our family. From our ancestral grandmothers to us. 🥰

If anyone ever gets a chance, please visit Oaxaca respectfully! The agriculture from my homeland is beyond beautiful to the point that our landscape inspired a lot of the scenery in the movie Avatar

The Industrial Revolution would’ve never happened without the excess calories gained from corn and potatoes. Which have an insane yield where the only comparable old world crop was rice. But Corn and Potatoes were far more sturdy.

so cool! I remember being in elementary school and they taught us that corn used to be a few kernels on the end of a blade of grass. This makes so much more sense

Dang. As a wild grass/grain that teosinte infructescence is actually sort of massive! Easy to see why ancestral farmers picked it for cultivation!

That’s super cool! Do you know about Sierra Mixe corn? It is a variety from Oaxaca Mexico and it’s a naturally nitrogen fixing corn that produces slime that acts as a matrix for nitrogen fixing bacteria.
