🚨Handling the “ageist” direct report👇 When we are on the receiving end of disrespectful behaviour it can really catch us off guard. It’s not a nice feeling and can be hurtful and impact our confidence. Especially when a comment is made about something we can’t change like our age. Try to avoid meeting the disrespect with an emotional reaction as this will keep you stuck in the same dynamic. Instead try to remain calm and clearly assert your boundaries. This is about them not you. Here is an example of how you can respond assertively: “I’m happy to talk about this further and I do need you to speak to me respectfully. I may be younger/ older and I still need to be treated with respect” Then shift the dynamic by asking them a question to encourage them to reflect. The approach shown in this video can be adapted if the ageism is the other way around i.e. you’re older than your direct report. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised and will not fit every situation. Therefore, please use your own judgement when using this advice and adapt it to suit your situation. You’ve got this 💪 💬 Have you ever been in a situation similar to this? Either as a manager older or younger than your direct report? Share your experiences in the comments so we can learn from each other 😊 💾 Save this for when you might need it ✈️ Share with someone who this could help 🚀 Follow for more tips on handling tricky situations at work #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #communicationskills #difficultconversations #boundaries #assertive #managingpeople
