What's the biggest mistake you think people make when listening? They start thinking about their response before the other person has even finished speaking. We have this habit of preparing our reply while the other person is still talking, but it's impossible to truly listen and formulate a response at the same time while you're still being given information. And what happens as a result? You end up forming your response based on only a small part of what was said. So when you finally respond, the other person is left thinking, “That doesn't answer what I just said. Were you even listening to me?” And the truth is, no, I wasn't. I heard the first three words and immediately started crafting my response in my head. I didn't wait. We tend to think of listening as a passive act of simply receiving words, when in reality, it's the exact opposite. Listening is the active pursuit of understanding. Pretending to listen is one of the most disrespectful things you can do. True listening is more like a process of discovery, where you're asking yourself, “How can I better understand what's really going on here?” And if I want to respond, I'll wait until you've finished speaking, give myself a moment, and then respond.
