The store employees only had the right to look inside the purse long enough to find identification, not to conduct a full search or handle items in a way that goes beyond locating the owner. Because the purse was first left unattended in a public aisle, then handled by at least one employee, and finally stored in an office where multiple people—including employees who came and went—had unrestricted access, there is no continuous or secure chain of custody. This means the purse and its contents cannot be reliably linked to the owner at the moment the drugs were allegedly placed inside, and the state cannot prove that the drugs were in the purse before multiple other people had the opportunity to tamper with or add items. In short, both the limited authority of the store employees and the broken chain of custody make it impossible to establish actual or constructive possession
