Maybe not permission to search but they do need probable cause (far as I know) which could be an open bottle of alcohol or nearly anything officer claims he thought he observed, smelled or imagined, sadly - so, sorry, your screwed either way. If they wanna search they will find a reason. It drives me nuts to hear people saying, “I know my rights” when clearly they don’t, nor do they understand how much grey area’s involved in that. The only one they can’t necessarily screw with is the right to remain silent!
