In cities like NYC and DC, these rules don’t really work though. Cars obey the laws significantly more than cyclists due to strict enforcement through traffic cameras. Same is not true of cyclists, and to a huge determinant to pedestrians safety.

Cyclists should yield at stop signs but the ones near me just blow thru, almost running over pedestrians, never stopping for pedestrian walk signs, riding the wrong direction, causing traffic and near collisions by riding the wrong direction. Even riding on the sidewalk! I ride but NOT LIKE THAT

The consequences of a cycle accident are minimal compared to a vehicle accident. A bike blowing a stop sign will probably only hurt themselves. A car blowing a stop sign can destroy an entire family.

While I agree this is safer for cyclists, it does create a dangerous situation for pedestrians. I regularly walk in my neighbourhood and am cut off at pedestrian crossings by cyclists.

Idaho Stop, baby!! Cyclists yield at stop sign, stop on red light and proceed when safe. Even in Boise, Idaho many drivers don’t know this is the rule of the road.

I’m a cyclist. I agree with most of what you’ve said. But I’ve had cyclists blow through stop signs at speed and have almost hit them (in a car). And while cycling, I’ve been hit by people on scooters who’ve blown through red lights. Cyclists/scooters should at least SLOW DOWN for stop signs and should stop for red lights.

Idaho state law, cyclists are explicitly allowed to ignore stop signs. Slowing down isnt required, but it’s advised.

Having momentum as a cyclist gives you options if something comes your way - swerve, speed up or stop. Stop sign intersections take all of those options away, basically making you a sitting duck as you enter the intersection and are most likely to encounter a motorist crossing your path without right of way.

On a bike I can easily see all the way down the road in both directions to see if a car is coming, and if not I go. In NYC a car would have to have drive halfway into the intersection to be able to see down the road.

I feel like ppl are really downplaying how many car users drive as if they’re the only ones out using the road at all times. Like irresponsible cycling is definitely apart of the problem, but reality is that many ppl driving are doing so either distracted, not very well, or more commonly both at the same time. Everyone should be accountable but the amount of “wrong” ppl think cyclists do is not anywhere near the amount drivers as a whole are doing at any given time or even to the same severity

Cyclists don't just risk injuring themselves by ignoring thrbrules of the road. They put pedestrians and other vehicle users at risk too. As for stopping faster than a car? Maybe they can stop their bike faster but that doesn't kill their momentum

we have "share the road" signs all around my city. they basically translate to "good luck!", and if you don't hop onto the sidewalk you're gonna get hit.
