@jonjon.jpeg: Should cyclists get a little more leeway when it comes to how they ride on the road? I believe they should. In this video, I break down why cyclists can look intense or unpredictable, yet still react strongly when drivers make even small mistakes. #cyclist #carculture #vehicularcycling #transportation
If a cyclist runs a stop sign and they hit a car, they get hurt. If a car runs a stop sign and they hit a cyclist, the cyclist gets hurt. Let the cyclist make the decision on when to go.

Solid argument but my fear is that with their earbuds in they are eliminating one of the senses that they are using to judge the safety in continuous travel. Thus going mostly on sight like a vehicle driver.

and the number 1 reason cyclists shouldn't be held to the same standard as drivers: they don't kill people and destroy things at the same rate.

I love Colorado's law on this. Stop signs are yields and stop lights are stop signs for bicycles.
It also saves a lot of energy as a cyclist to not have to come to a complete stop.

Any time as a cyclist that I have stopped at a stop sign (bc hey, I’m just following the rules!) I get angry looks when it takes 2-3 sec longer than they’re used to for me to get my foot on the pedal & make it through the intersection. With the hate towards cyclists from drivers I’m damned if I do, damned if I don’t.

And this is just one example. Sit at literally any busy intersection and count how many people come to a complete stop. Anyone who thinks this is uniquely a cyclist problem is either being disingenuous or is willfully ignorant

John Forrester got off too easy

Forester was against all bike lanes, not just those that were designed poorly. He was an active impediment to progressing inclusive infrastructure.

I think the right move is to give cyclists their own lane like in Holland. People on bicycles are too vulnerable to cars, but they are moving too quickly to be safe to share sidewalks with pedestrians. I have both cycled and driven a lot in europe and north america so had a very good comparison of both systems.

I once got a ticket and had to do traffic school for running a stop sign on my bike.

I feel like what's left out of your model (and what is often at the core of these discussion) is cyclists interactions with pedestrians. Does including them change your model?

Do drivers only notice when cyclists run red lights? I see irresponsible drivers run red lights almost every time I go out in my car

The cyclists that behave the most recklessly are the hobbyists you can tell cause they always got that little outfit on

Yes, I would be in favor of abundant camera surveillance to automatically send tickets to anyone who violates traffic laws. Then use the revenue to build cycling infrastructure that separates them from car traffic and streamlines their movement without unnecessary stops

And what car drivers fail to recognize is that respecting cyclists on the road actually benefits everyone. The more people that feel safe to bike in your city, the less cars there will be. Which equals less traffic, easier parking, and better for the environment. I live in philly where our public transit is limited and being defunded and i can’t believe how many people tell me they WISH they could bike instead of drive because parking is a terrible issue, but they don’t feel safe to!

I think on majority pedestrian pathways they should be held to VERY strict standards. On roads, where they only have a fraction of the infrastructure and protection, I believe they can do whatever the hell they want to stay safe from 1 ton machines moving fast. I live in a city and prefer my car or to walk, but it’s because I don’t feel safe on a bike. I wish I could bike everywhere!

Anyone who biked for a minimal amount of time will realize complete stop for cyclists makes no sense.

As a driver, with critical thinking, I don't expect bikers to completely stop, but when they blast through stop signs with no change in momentum or care, that's on them.
