There are a lot of things people expect when they visit an animal sanctuary. Horses, goats, alpacas, maybe even a camel wandering around outside. What they don’t expect is to walk into the kitchen and find that same camel standing next to the stove while someone is desperately trying to protect a pot of homemade chicken soup. That’s pretty much life with Albert. This wasn’t his first kitchen visit, which explains the “…again.” If someone forgets to latch the Dutch door, Albert takes it as an invitation. He doesn’t sneak in. He confidently walks into the house like he owns the place. By the time I see him, my only concern is the soup, so I yell, “Get him out with an apple! Don’t let him eat my soup!” Around here, apples are the universal camel negotiation tool. Poor Alex knows exactly what to do because we’ve been through this before. One apple later, Albert happily follows him outside as if nothing unusual has happened. Meanwhile, the rest of us are left wondering how a perfectly normal afternoon somehow turned into another camel rescue mission in the kitchen. As Albert finally heads out the door, I can’t help but tell him, “I love you… but you’ve got to stop doing that.” That’s life at Rancho Grande. Most people worry about dogs stealing dinner. We worry about a 1,500-pound camel deciding the kitchen looks like the perfect place to visit.
