I think it’s very possible that the Buddha also understood that the path can be quite different for women. I have been in spaces (not Buddhist, but very similar) where the path to enlightenment was made available to me, but in the end I found that that particular method was not suitable for a woman’s body. At that time in India, there was also quite a lot of wisdom (although not openly written about for centuries) about the path of enlightenment for yoginis, which also spread into Tibetan Buddhism. I am sure he was aware and wanted a separate space for women to practice in their own way, safely!

in both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism, women, although can achieve Arahat, cannot become a Buddha. And there's a culture stigma attached with Buddhism that being a woman is inferior to man due to them making lesser good karma than who will become a man. That idea is also discussed in Soma Sutta in Theravada pittaka. However, Soma Sutta is regarded as a later addition by scholars. Also, we cannot neglect that Bikkhunis (female monks) have rules which are prejudiced against them. For example, Bikkhunis, even if she's in the Sangha for 100 years, have to bow down to a new Bikkhu (male monk)
