Old Cypress knees I’m not sure honestly why they grow upwards, but I’ve always thought it was because they are in areas with a very high water table!

I’m not sure why they grow this way - but I believe it is a bald cypress tree.

Tree roots grow above ground because of soil compaction, erosion, insufficient space, and a lack of oxygen or water in the soil. Natural factors like tree species with shallow roots and aging roots that thicken over time also contribute. When roots are deprived of what they need underground, they can grow towards the surface to find them.
