I work at a printer firm and I can confirm it is because a book has to be a multiple of 4 😊 love this fun fact though! raising awareness for the production of books 🎉

Yes everyone it is multiples of 4 but some printers can do 16 on a sheet and it’s cheaper that way cause less sheets

This is because books are bound in what are called “signatures”, single sheets of paper folded multiple times to create a section of pages. The number of pages in a signature is variable and depends on the book's size and printing process, but it is always a multiple of four.

Did this not to be the case in the 18th century? Old editions of books I always find never have extra pages and just end at the last page
