Phoenix arguably is one of the most, if not the most well gridded cities in the country. It’s so easy to navigate.

TL;DR Phoenix is doomed flat sprawling suburban hellscape that will begin to decline once the major corpos that exploit it move on.

Phoenix is proof that just because you can build a city somewhere doesn't mean you should😭

one of the biggest problems with the climate in Phoenix today vs the climate that the Hohokam people had to deal with is asphalt/concrete and the heat dome effect that are brought along with it the heat. its bad enough that the days get to 115+, but the fact that it takes until midnight before the air gets below 100 and only ever goes to about 85-95 by morning, only to get baked again.

Urban infrastructure is TERRIBLE, suburb sprawl nightmare. Nothing is walkable, housing is in spite of the environment rather than adapt housing to its environment and its just a concrete jungle without the glamor of LA or NYC

It’s also the largest capital city in the US. I was born and raised here and did not know this. My house is literally on a canal. Fascinating

lived in Phoenix my whole life and have heard of the Hohokam a bunch of times but I've NEVER had this history of the name and the canals taught to me. Thanks for enlightening me history I probably shouldve learned long ago!

They did not face the same conditions as we do today. It used to get cool at night. Urban heat island effect has made it much worse now

Grew up in Phoenix, have no desire to ever return but this video was super interesting! I have a new appreciation for the city & the natives that built it thousands of years ago

Nick Loper :
@Nick Loper: What no one mentions is phoenix is in a valley that’s a huge flood basin. A ton of water converges here from the north creating a very suitable landscape for farming. It also has a great winter that’s much more hospitable than northern regions of the US. Calling it inhospitable would be similar to calling Chicago inhospitable.
