The "teens are disrespectful jerks and terrible to parent" to "why doesn't my adult kid want a relationship with me" pipeline

I could not trust my mother, I still don't trust her with anything that matters. She could not handle me as a toddler, child, teenager, or adult. She's not a safe space, and never has been. She will die a dangerous and destructive woman. This is her legacy 💯

All the “moody teenagers” that I’ve met had emotionally neglectful parents. Their parents were not safe emotionally. They didn’t have the chance to see healthy communication or healthy relationships. Lots of the time the “moody teenager” has depression, anxiety, other mental health issues, and/or even are undiagnosed neurodivergent kids who feel alone, confused, and misunderstood. Most parents deal with “moody teenagers” in the wrong way. Everyone just wants to feel heard and kids and teenagers often have no idea how to communicate their emotions well.

I was called a spoiled brat as a kid. I didn’t even know what it meant. Looking back it doesn’t make sense to me since I was “spanked”, in public, if I asked for anything at the store. I was slapped if my mom didn’t like what I said or if I stood up for myself… and I was neglected constantly. How was I a spoiled brat?

This starts with parents who claim "my kid will never feel comfortable telling me no" or "I don't allow my kid to backtalk" - be a safe space from day one for all emotions or expect a sneaky dysregulated teen.

Well said. I think of it like babies/toddlers at daycare - might be fine all day, then at pick up break out crying when they see their parents (it’s because they finally feel “safe” to express their emotions and let their guard down).

So how do we turn it around? Let’s say we have reacted defensively in the past, how do we show them we are a safe space, that we only want to help?

Teenagers are 💯 the best. They’re so amazing. It’s so sad when ppl are shocked that I say how great it is to have my teens.

Genuine question. How can you differentiate correlation vs causation here? Does perceiving the child as “difficult” cause behavior problems or do behavior differences cause parents to perceive them as difficult?

As someone with a teen at home, what do you suggest? Cause I’ve tried to create a safe place, but I’m never met in the middle… ever! And I’m not a mind reader… the mistreatment is hurtful

I'm genuinely curious about what you said regarding the disrespectful language. Ive heard the opposite too - that especially for young boys we need to teach them not to weaponize their anger, especially against their mothers. As a parent where's the line between accepting/normalising abuse and handling their big feelings?

So good! I remember what disconnected language felt like as a child/teen, and things I’ve said to and about my children. Those words never felt right.

I couldn’t agree more, so many kids the parents just don’t want to handle them. They are not the “easy” kid anymore and the parent discards.

💯 You need to dig down & remember as a parent how you felt as a teenager & if you can’t it’s most likely blocked. Silver lining of deconstructing & healthy parenting is you heal Yourself by doing so & your kids Win in life. Double silver lining ✨
