For 80% of working Americans, they would probably prefer Chinese freedom from chaos, hunger, poverty. The rich or capitalists would support individual freedom in the US.

If we remember the days when smoking was banned in restaurants; smokers tended to see the ban as an infringement of their freedom. Non-smokers saw it as freedom from being exposed to passive smoking.

This is an idea Ive recently had to come to grips with. When I realized to a capitalist, freedom is the ability to operate and make money however you like. While for me, freedom is the removal of outside influences in my decision making.

Humans are a social animal. Through that lens, ‘freedom to’ should always take a back seat to ‘freedom from’. No person is an island.

I think there could be a better balance of both. Achieving that balance would mean a big shift in wealth. I don’t think such change will happen anytime soon.

Anyone may have their freedom as long it doesn't harn others, it doesn't insult others, it doesn't humiliate other. A freedom is not free anymore when it is imposed to others.

Perhaps there are two phases in the “acquisition of freedom”. Take China as an example. When a nation is in chaos and poverty, as China once was, the priority should be “freedom from”, freedom from hunger, instability, and oppression. As the country develops, education levels rise, and a sense of collective responsibility takes root, then freedom to, the freedom to express, to create, to choose can begin to flourish. However, this later form of freedom should always be exercised with regard for the wellbeing of the collective. The American brand of individualistic freedom, often pursued with little concern for others, imo, deeply flawed.

What if I want to criticise the treatment of others? That’s using my freedom to speak so others can have freedoms from…Can’t we work towards both freedoms?

Honestly, I think Canadian culture is a mixture of the two. Does one have more weight than the other? I’ll have to get back to you… 🤔

Growing up is realizing there are no real absolutes in life. It's like the capitalism vs communism vs socialism, etc debate. There is no one society that can survive without some mix. And fighting over such ideologies feels hypocritical at some point

Freedom from with some freedom to like love who you want as long as you are of age to consent. freedom to practice religion as long as you are not forcing it only giving the option to worship, freedom to choose what profession and job you want. i guess I want people to be free to understand their freedoms end where the others begins if that makes sense. Mostly lean to freedom from.😍💗😎✌️🌈

There has never been such a thing as absolute freedom; one can only experience that sensation in the wilderness. Humans are social creatures, and excessive freedom will have an impact on others, leading to their rejection of you. Therefore, freedom should be limited and approved by the majority. It should not be an unrestricted behavior that disregards the well-being of others.

The "ONLY" freedom Americans have over better countries is the freedom to speak against our government. Besides that, we are the most financially oppressed society on the planet.

In Canada, an individual's right to freedom must be balanced with the need to protect others, for example, laws against hate speech are considered a justifiable limit on freedom of expression. I am okay with this. Because I work in the United States, I see their brand of “freedom” and it is not working for most people and I think Americans forgot the true meaning of “freedom.” Freedom is not the right to do as you please,it means responsibility, to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.
