Gotta say, this one doesn’t sit right. When someone with your platform promotes doing free work, it normalises a mindset that’s been gutting the industry for years. If you want to explore new ideas, do passion projects, don’t call it “free client work”. It might work for you, but for younger designers, it teaches people to undervalue what we do. We’ve got to stop dressing up exploitation as “opportunity”.

If a client doesn't have a traditional budget, you could at least negotiate a percentage of profits or barter some free mac n' cheese...

if you're gonna do it for free, you have to set conditions, otherwise theres gonna be a million revisions and they'll take full advantage of you

Petty sure most of these ‘point at screen’ brands designers make up projects because a letterform works so well in a particular context… And now they’re ok-ing free work. Great!

No budget? No problem! I'd trade a logo for a lifetime pass of mac n cheese. I've taken commissions in exchange for chocolate before just cuz I was craving it 🤣

I think it's favourable as a beginner designer to do this in order to fill your portfolio, just don't make it a habit. 😅

Do you find the client let's you do whatever though? I've found it's hard to get buy in even if you make it clear it's portfolio builder project

nah, work is work, if someone's using it commercially they should pay, and if they can't afford to right now they can create a revenue share or something else

You do fantastic work and I think a lot of people are off base here. I wish we could have worked together but you were booked up- your recommendation in James West was a lifesaver though! He brought On Point Provisions to life.

I always thing of a “free product” as me paying for advertising by doing something pro-bono. You’re buying ad space with your labor, basically
