It was a really good movie, great movie, but I hated watching it. The acting, the casting, the environment, the atmosphere, all wonderful. 5 stars would not watch again.

Thank you!! A perfect example of this is the movie ‘The Girl with all of the gifts.’ The director said they hired the best actress for the lead. A black girl. However the lead being a black girl added so much more depth to the movie that they almost couldn’t write.

Conscious casting is absolutely my preference. When done right, we need to involve the marginalized folks (especially wry race) in their interpretation of the role and if and how their marginalization is featured or interpreted is VITAL. And that only happens if we cast consciously and don't pretend like we are color blind.

I really love what they did with Art, because in the book, he was a nightrider. I wasn't sure how they were going to adapt that since I saw that he was being played by a black man. I think they tweaked his character and adapted him beautifully, and the actor was incredible.

YESSSS ugh im so glad you talked about this, deepening story’s from older works by adding diversity that informs and expands on the original character. It adds so much more depth to characters and storylines.

I agree I loved this adaptation. I was to be honest, a little worried when I saw the casting for pete because of his ending AND his backstory, the playing into stereotype it could have portrayed was a little worrisome to me. but they changed both of those things and no worries were left to be had LMAO. almost every change they made from the book to the movie made sense to me, and I am so glad it was good !

i would be so interested to know how much of the film was written with actors of specific races in mind or if they adapted the script in places to fit the people they cast. like did they plan for collie to be native american, or did they cast joshua odjick then change things like including him singing as he dies? i don't know enough about film production to know if they could change the script that far into the process, would like your take as someone who studied it!!

The aspect of a firy temper when it pertains to the red hand to black female character pipeline is not one I'd heard before and I can't unsee it now. The explanation I'd always heard for it was that having red hair was associated with Irish people and being Irish wasn't actually considered being white until around ww2, so the casting change was an attempt to bring to mind a similar kind of racial baggage, if a more severe one, as the original character would have.

SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST DEATH IN THE LONG WALK!! And these types of patterns when it comes to race in the long walk cast can't be coincidental either. Considering that the very first death is a boy who lied about his age to get in the long walk. The youngest died first, the complete loss of innocents and to quote him "It ain't fair". Cuz it's not, so race, age, gender (all male) is very very deliberate. I enjoyed this vid a lot, I did not clock the indigenous connotations with Collie, Art being a black Christian and also the kid with the radio. That's so incredibly cool and I need WAY MORE Colour conscious casting

I can’t view this from a non white perspective but as a fat person I think I’ve had a similar issue in mind with the Netflix P&P adaptation because I’m so disappointed that they’d cast a plus size actor in the role of Kitty as a silly flirt that no one wants or takes seriously. It’s actually more harmful than if they hadn’t bothered at all.

I haven’t finished your video but the second you mentioned indigenous casting I remembered that the 2nd Great Gatsby musical adaptation (Florence Welch one) that still hasn’t made it to Broadway cast an indigenous men as Gatsby’s father and THE SUBTEXT THAT ADDS IS INSANE. Ok now that I got that out and won’t forget I shall continue
