Most people in nyc are in the situation you’re in - bus drivers, conductors, janitors, teachers. where do you think all these go after work? home!! many in the city. it’s so ridiculous that nyc has been rebranded as some rich people city when it’s regular folk who made this city what it is.

I think people who have doubts are not from the tri-state area. We don’t live here like tourists do. We don’t go out and buy $25 cocktails every weekend and pay $150 for dinners (per person) We budget, we don’t go out a ton. There is so much to do in the city for FREE or for not a lot of money. A young person with little to no debt can actually save on a $52k a year.

For some reason I always think about this when it comes to NY rent, my husband and I each have a car payment of $498 and insurance is $200 a month. That’s almost $1200. A monthly unlimited subway pass also includes buses and is only $132 a month, we pay double that for 2 cars for gas. Putting your car expenses towards your rent in NYC is petty much about the same.
