It’s getting pretty bad. I work for a class 1 in the US. They are massively lacking maintenance on freight cars, locomotives and track. 1 person is coming and eventually they will be unmanned

I think the reason why derailments and train accidents have gotten so common is because they keep making the trains longer and longer.
autonomous trains would need to have a hard cap on car numbers

Unions need to negotiate for the loss of money going into railroad retirement when companies get rid of positions.

I’ve been saying this ever since I got in with the railroad, they’re going to try to do it, but it’s going to take something worse than the Palestine incident for them to leave things alone and let us operate the trains not computers. In North America the tech is already here, they just don’t have the authorization to go fully autonomous..

Here in the US they got self driving trucks it takes six people for that to get down the road that but the government is giving these people hundreds of millions of dollars to look into it

So like on one hand I don't really like autonomous trains but 1 derailment hardly disproves the concept. You would be making a better argument that autonomous trains wouldn't work in Canada because of the vastly different operating environment to the pilbara.

They deliberately derailed as it rolled away unmanned due to human error by putting the hand brakes on the incorrect train

Trains will derail with people onboard makes no difference … it’s the track / rail that causes it to derail

As a conductor there have been several times when our train was running autonomously and the computer encountered a situation it got behind on and requested “human intervention” on the screen
