I knew I needed to stop the moment I caught that one fish that made me feel pure joy, the thought of how pretty it looked, how I caught something like it and how rare it was. But in just a few moments I knew I had to release it, knowing it was suffocating by the second that it was in my hands. I thought of putting it in a bucket since it needed to breathe and I wanted to admire it more, but realization hits that that bucket is not where it belongs. I cut myself from trying to be gentle in removing it from the lure. It was free, but the memories of how I once caught something so great lingers and how I knew I'll never be able to catch anything else that could compare. So I stopped, fully knowing that catching fish means hurting the same fish that I was previously so proud of.
