Irish, Jewish, and Italian immigrants were once welcomed for their work, then blamed when the economy tightened. This country’s strength has always been immigration. The debate over who’s “illegal” and who isn’t? That’s a system built for convenience. Immigration becomes patriotic when it fuels farms and factories, but villainized when politicians need a scapegoat. Every culture borrows from every culture, but America built an empire on that remix. Taking ideas, labor, and flavors from everywhere, calling it innovation, and sometimes printing more money to make it work. The deeper convo about AI and the social safety net’s for another day, but in this moment of rising nativism, it’s worth remembering: the American experiment only works because of immigrants. Always has. Always will.
