This is why there were so many redheads in animated Y2K animated shows (cartoons) The reason these nostalgic animated shows (many of which were called “girl cartoons”) that were popular with millennials in the 2000s (many of which were the best cartoon series for kids) like Totally Spies, As Told By Ginger, Kim Possible, Winx Club, Pepper Anne, Powerpuff Girls, WITCH, Wild Thornberrys, Madeline, and strawberry shortcake featured so many redheads: 1. The "Not Like Other Girls" Archetype Y2K culture was obsessed with main characters who were special but relatable. 2. Network Differentiation Networks were all competing for the same tween girl demographic simultaneously so once one redheaded lead proved successful, the rest followed because executives pattern match and it simply became a self reinforcing cycle. 3. The "Diversity" Compromise I'm not saying this is right, I’m saying this was what I also think was happening: It was a design choice that let networks sidestep making stronger representation decisions while still feeling like they were giving girls a "unique" main character. A lot of those shows were developed in rooms that weren't exactly prioritizing diversity, and red hair became a convenient middle ground. And that’s one of many reasons why it’s so important to have as much diversity as you can in every work room! #tv #tvshow #millennials #animation #animationcartoon
