@interesting.always.1: @povmick/IG scratches the itch we’ve all had - what actually happens when you pull the tabs on an airplane life preserver. The modern inflatable life vest, officially known as a personal flotation device (PFD), dates back to the 1920s when aviation safety became a priority for over-water flights. Early versions used cork or kapok (a buoyant plant fiber), but by World War II, engineers developed CO₂-activated vests that could inflate instantly via pull tabs - technology later adopted by commercial airlines. Each vest contains two CO₂ cartridges connected to ripcords; when pulled, they puncture the seals, releasing compressed gas to inflate the twin bladders. Backup mouth tubes allow manual inflation if needed. Though every pre-flight demo shows it, almost no one actually sees it in action - which is why this clip satisfies decades of collective curiosity.
