In *The Prince*, Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527) argued that political power and its preservation are not necessarily bound by moral standards. His principle was essentially: the end justifies the means—that is, if a higher goal (such as the stability of the state or the securing of power) is to be achieved, then even morally questionable or brutal means can be justified. This means that, in his view, a ruler was permitted to lie, deceive, use violence, or even kill people if it served the greater political purpose. He thus separated ethics from politics and judged actions by their success, not by their moral worth. 😬
