This is helping me so much because I grew up with a father who always said “it’s my way or the highway,” he had no regard for how I felt as a daughter.

it’s sad how often parents will go through something difficult (ie. being a single mother, being exploited at work etc) and then take out their frustration at the situation on their children without even a hint of insight

the label/diagnosis of "ODD" really upsets me. I'm positive I'd have been labelled that as a child, bc I was only reacting to my abuse by the hands of my parents. I understand if it's a legitimate diagnosis, but we can see in that comment itself how it can be used to misplace blame onto a child who's likely going through something out of their control.

My mother is a narcissist. Her demands were always in service to herself, and almost never in my best interest (unless there was overlap). My defiance of her literally saved my life, and is the only way I could develop shreds of myself under her oppression.

The red flag was how she said she discouraged him from going into the military because she knew he’d be miserable.

I love this. I truly believe when parents say “their behavior came out of nowhere” is a cop out. There are genetic components in mental health but kids are not born inherently “bad.”

We do not do well as a society in developing skills around emotional regulation and communication.

The last sentence too. She speaks for her children that they apparently have always known what matters most is their happiness. Countless of times I have seen parents say something similar about what their kids supposedly know/feel. But I bet that never came out of their mouth. They just make it up. Probably to make themselves feel better that they're not as bad at parenting as they deep down know.

One could argue that the lack of being with the father could impact the child needing good relationship with both parents. Also attachment with her sounded ruptured from her own doing. Children are always, yes always, responding to their environments. It’s why the concept of Repetition Compulsion is a thing.

Now that I’m in my 40’s and learning about myself, I’m realizing that I probably fit the ODD profile. Thankfully I was raised with a strict, but loving father that I respected so it never grew into too much of a problem. I still wanna do what I wanna do, but my relationship with my father taught me how to respect authority so I never got in too much trouble. Without him being a good example for me, I’d probably be in jail now 🤷🏻‍♀

I completely agree. I was being actively abused on my visitation at my moms my dad didn’t know. I was undiagnosed autistic and actively becoming BPD. My dad was undiagnosed AudADHDOCD and he did not raise me in an authoritarian household. He was the single dad undermined by every mother around and he always told me it was his job to make me an independent responsible desisive self aware person. I won’t say I was easy but he always thought me consequences. He and I are also friends in adulthood.

I argued against my son having an ODD diagnosis because to me he wasn't "defiant" for no reason. Anyway he has an autism diagnosis now and is in a therapeutic school and doing much better. He had a rough start to public education with his parents splitting up and moving to a different country all in 1 months (from his perspective).

Do you think reframing what we see as a behavioral "issue" needs to be a bigger part of this conversation? Like what is typical behaviour/assertion of autonomy that should be status quo expected, and what is caused by ineffective/unattuned parenting? And what, if any, is the role of child temperament in this?

Her description SCREAMS nervous system dysregulation. And when the parents dysregulated, they create a dysregulated child. Guarantee that adult child did not has ODD & was just mirroring back the dysregulation the mother was modeling.

To what degree are we not the authority figure in the house? I find it really confusing that people keep talking about authoritarian parenting, which I understand but at what age do we provide autonomy? Maybe for me this is confusing because my child is so young and he is three. But I absolutely think he is being defiant when he doesn’t want to brush his teeth and go to the bathroom before bed like we do every single night and those are things for his health necessary. Does that truly make me an authoritarian parent? Or does the style as children age and you continue being authoritative? I try to be assertive with my child. But at the end of the day if he’s telling me he doesn’t want to go potty and brush his teeth, guess what we’re still going to do that before bed.

Just had a young family member diagnosed with ODD. He’s autistic. Dad’s autistic. Grandmother is autistic. Wtf is going on here?!? The kid isn’t being defiant he’s AUTISTIC and doesn’t have a clue why he should listen and follow directions! 😞

PMDD and ODD are comorbid/differential diagnoses with ADHD. ADHD is often genetic…. Just something to consider discussing with a provider…
