@readingonabus: On October 28, 1910, Leo Tolstoy left his family, asking his wife not to look for him. He was 82 y.o. and had no idea where he was headed. 3 days later, he started feeling sick on the train, developed pneumonia, and stopped his trip at the Astapovo train station. The station was very small and remote. so Tolstoy had nowhere to go. The stationmaster Ivan Ozolin invited him to stay at his house. Leo Tolstoy passed away on November 7, 1910 in Ozolin's house. Before his death, the train station was visited by thousands. Besides the sorrow caused by her husband's death, Sophia Tolstaya, who had dedicated her entire life to her husband's work, was hit by another misfortune Tolstoy had renounced the copyright for his works and left his entire family (8 kids) with absolutely no income. Sophia did know about her husband's desire to renounce property rights. He had actually written several wills mentioning this but she destroyed them, stating he would not let his family with no income. The will that "survived" and left Sophia speechless had been written a few months before his death. #tolstoy #BookTok #historytok #facts #HistoryTime

She shouldn’t have been surprised. It was a very unhappy marriage. In 1914, all copyrights were reverted to her.

Ladies, keep working on yourselves. Education and experience will never abandon you nor leave you in the streets. Never stop living to help a man grow.

Tolstoy wrote an entire novel about his desire for a younger woman. He was always a terrible husband.

Robbing his family in death to emphasize an egalitarian, anti-capitalist, anti-possession philosophy was a selfish, narcissistic act. Much like the communists who followed him, his actions, however noble the intention, caused great suffering in the real world.
