Ofc you’re going to try an ankle fusion . Do what you can to keep your leg. You don’t want an amputation

I had an ankle fusion 29 years ago. It took about 6 months to get back to full activity. Now, I don’t even notice it

I’m a physical therapist, and honestly, ankle fusions are so hit or miss. The majority of people I work with though have forever deficits and get very frustrated with their lack of progress. I personally think ankle fusions are just awful. It’s an awful recovery, it causes so many other joint issues just like you said, and I would opt out of one if it ever became a need for me.

I doing have this experience specifically, but I am a prosthetist (provider of prosthetic limbs). IF you decide to explore the amputation route, I would recommend working with a surgeon who works directly with a prosthetist. Genuinely ask which prosthetists they work with. Having the input of a prosthetist prior the amputation surgery can ensure they do the surgery in a way that “works well” with a prosthesis. I have seen a number of people that have had successful amputation post attempted limb salvage.

Amputee here. I would do everything possible to save the foot. Fusion has advanced and you get to keep the feeling in your foot. Plus an ankle replacement might be available soon. Amputation doesn't solve the problem, it's just another set of problems. After 45 years, I still have terrible phantom pains.

My grandpa had a prosthetic leg for all of his adult life. He didn’t let it stop him from anything. I see that spark for life in you. Amputate and go LIVE again🫶 you are incredible!

My husband is a double bka. He decided to do this after having both ankles fused. After his fusions, he had a lack of blood flow, failed grafts, hip and back problems and arthritis. He had his legs amputated 1 at a time. After the recoveries, he is SO MUCH BETTER!!!!!

Everytime I have to make a hard decision, I carry around a piece of paper with me and write down the pros and cons of each as they come to me, then all the facts are in front of me when it comes time to make the decision.

Hi!! I’m a CPO (certified prosthetist orthotist) and ankle fusions are sooo hit or miss. I have several BK amputees who elected for amputation after fractures and they’ve had good outcomes. Trust your gut! I’d reach out to a prosthetic company in your area and see if they have peer support patients who are able to chat about their experiences :)

I know it’s not of use now, but for everyone else, never try to swerve to avoid deer (or any other large wildlife), especially if it will put you off the road. It’s best to just take the full on collision. While your car will likely get totaled, this gives you the best chance of avoiding major injury.

It sounds like amputation and prosthetic leg sounds far easier and less complicated. prosthetics can be customized to be super cute on top too so another bonus

it sounds like you’ve already made your decision. do what is best for you and your pain. i think you should amputate. like you said, you can do so much with a prosthetic and your quality of life will be so much better if you are free and as healthy and pain free as you can be. it’ll be a tough journey but you can do it, you’ve already proven just how tough you are and how badly you want to be able to do the things you love. 💖

it kind of sounds like you've already made your decision. If you are looking for confirmation here, you've got it. while the amputation sounds scary, it's a solution to the problem, where an ankle fusion is not actually a solution, it's more of a Band-Aid that will still need a solution down the road. Go for it.

Hiiii. I am a below the knee amputee (from birth) so I can’t speak to the experience of that change later in life. I can imagine that is very overwhelming, but you do seem SO ready to get the most out of life and tackle that process with grace and strength. I am a 28 year old woman who just got the prosthetic with an adjustable ankle/heel & wearing heels for the first time & I’m over the moon!! I’ve played soccer, been on danceline, and just haven’t let much stop me. There’s of course physical and mental challenges, but overall I don’t feel like I lack any quality of life!! Just make adjustments as best I can for things that don’t come as easily. Either way you go, I’m sending so much love & light!!! You’re stunning and will always be! 💕
