@thesilentwitness1: On November 13, 1985, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted, releasing volcanic mudflows and debris (lahars) that devastated the city of Armero, in the department of Tolima, Colombia. The tragedy caused the death of approximately 23,000 people and destroyed 13 villages in addition to Armero. One of the victims was 13-year-old Omayra Sánchez Garzón. Her home was buried during the lahar, and she was trapped, her body immersed in water and debris, for about 60 hours—three days—while rescue teams struggled to free her. During her time trapped, Omayra maintained her composure: she talked to volunteers, asked for candy and soda, and even said she was late for school and a math test. Her hands turned white, her eyes turned red, and her face swelled—signs that her body was suffering the consequences of prolonged exposure. Rescuers realized her legs were trapped under concrete blocks and chest-deep in water, and that they lacked adequate equipment to free her without @mput@t!ng her. Unable to proceed safely, they decided it was more humane to let her rest and d!e than to prolong her suffering. Omayra died at 10:05 a.m. on November 16, 1985, possibly from gangrene or hypothermia. Her image, accompanied by footage and photographs—among the most striking of the tragedy—became a symbol of the Colombian state's failure to prepare for and respond to the disaster. Frank Fournier's photo won the World Press Photo of the Year award in 1986. To this day, Omayra is remembered as an icon of the Armero tragedy: not only for her painful d€ath, but for exposing the neglect and suffering of thousands.
