as someone who was once on actual paper food stamps- there's no pleasing them. if I bought fresh produce or meat I'd get " must be nice. wish I could afford to eat like that" but if I bought "junk" because it was cheaper they said the same thing. I was so happy when the actual EBT cards went out because it gave just a little bit of anonymity.

One part of this that I don't think is addressed enough, is how many people on food stamps have dietary restrictions. It's hard enough to feed yourself on what they give you, but if you can't eat dairy, gluten, corn, or one of the many other things one can be allergic to, food stamps is already really hard to get by on and I guarantee you that these food boxes they're proposing would not accommodate for peoples' specific dietary needs

Poor people are allowed to have treats, preferences, celebrations, and dietary restrictions. I'd rather pay for a cart full of cookies and chips than they not eat at all.

There’s a reason fry bread became a Native American staple. It’s not bc it’s historically our culture, but bc the government made it so we had next to nothing to eat and people had to learn how to stretch what food the government gave them, such as flour.

They also forget that many people live in food deserts and have no transportation. They rely on the food at the closest corner store. This isn’t just in rural areas. This is also in urban areas.

one idea i had came from a convenience store here in my country, they give you a point's card, every purchase gives you points, points become store credit basically, BUT certain items, such as cigarettes, beer, or similar, don't give points, so, what if we do the opposite, give people their food cards with a certain credit that replenishes every so often, but only certain items can be bought, no cigs, no beer, no pure sugar cookies, no sodas, no electronics, etc, only bread, fruits vegetables, personal hygiene, house cleaning, etc, that way, they don't have to ship food to each house, you simply get supermarkets to work all the logistics, pay them a fee, and then, whenever a person on the food stamps program needs groceries, they can just go to the nearest Walmart or whatever, and buy the products they need using the government card, seems feasible to me

Not to mention the whole "prepared food boxes" idea completely disregard individuals with food sensitivities and allergies. Which is just a further struggle that some poor families face cuz things like gluten-free items are more exspensive.

I'm homeless and receive food stamps, I'm in a shelter, we have restrictions on what we can bring in, along with that we don't have fridges either or a kitchen to cook, or even a microwave, that lady is definitely extremely ignorant

Years ago I watched a segment on a morning talk show with a world renowned chef who took up the challenge of cooking well balanced meals for his family of four with the alotted Snap benefits for a month and not use any prepackaged/processed foods. It required strict portions and reduced daily meals. The money didn’t stretch for there to be after school / sports snacks. And he and his wife skipped meals, so the kids could have 3 meals on the weekends. It wasn’t feasibly sustainable.
