from one “studied japanese in uni” girlie to another, I got the same thing thrown at me. the thing is, japanese allowed me to live in japan and do two internships, it helped me understand the music I liked, it helped me watch anime before they were subtitled lmao. the joy (and I mean real, true joy) that I’ve gotten from studying japanese far outweighs any money I could’ve earned from learning something else first. always follow your passion.

Such a dumb idea anyway, every ten years, shit like that changes. In the 80s and 90s, everyone was like “learn Japanese” and would totally be confused if you learned Cantonese. But these days it’s the opposite. For a while there, Indonesian was the language you should learn. But business is all over the world anyway, learn what you want to know coz capitalism doesn’t care about your plans, it will exploit you no matter what. I don’t even know what the hell “development” is as a subject or career path.
