Im from Lisbon (Portuguese girl here) and I just want to flee. It’s a nightmare for young adults to gain their independence here, I know a lot of people that are 35+ years and still live with their parents. This country is going downhill and unfortunately I don’t see a bright side at the end of this…

Was born and raised in Portugal and unfortunately Portugal is too small for the amount of rich expats and immigrants moving there, the issue is not the common immigrants but the rich that buy “holiday” houses or create hostels and Airbnbs… and obviously minimum wage in Portugal is ridiculously low

It’s very normal bc the rich immigrants that come from the US, UK , Germany and etc use golden Visa to buy Villas and apartments and this contributes to raising of apartments/rooms/houses prices .

the average rent is above the average salary. The current government has considered any rent up to 2300€ (more than twice of minimum wage) as "moderate", meaning no extra taxs for landlords up to that price

The main problem is lack of new housing, Population grew too fast, because of Expats and Immigrants...
I as an Immigrant feel bad for the Native Portuguese, who are nice, kind and amazing... They welcomed with open arms and they don't deserve this...
actually Portugal is quite empty but cities are where most jobs and modern housing are....

We don’t need more houses. We need the houses that are empty for most of the year to be rented with affordable rents. Keep building while having so many houses empty is far from sustainable 🫶🏼

It's not that we need more homes... It's that the homes we have should be affordable.
There's so many appartment complexes that are either empty cuz literally no one who works here can afford to buy them, or that are ALL owned by a landlord who rip residents off shamelessly, raising rents ridiculously.

My Portuguese teacher told us yesterday that the construction company which owns a big plot of land near us is deliberately not building new houses there to keep the prices up for their other houses.

Trailgranola :
There’s a lot of construction going on actually , but most of it’s for high-end apartments bought by foreign investors. They sit empty for years while their value goes up, and then they’re sold again to another foreign investor for an even higher price. So you get all this new housing, but it’s basically ghost housing. it’s there, just not actually available. And it’s the same thing happening all over the city

Housing construction declined massively after 2008 in every developed country besides China and Japan. The housing crisis is especially bad in the anglosphere because common law makes it more difficult to build housing
